Taking your pet to the doctor every year for a wellness exam is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure your pet’s ongoing health. We recommend annual exams for most pets. Older pets and those with chronic conditions may need more frequent visits.
At your pet’s wellness appointment, one of our doctors will perform a physical exam, checking your pet’s fur, skin, eyes, nose, and mouth for any unusual signs. We will also check your pet’s breathing and heart rate for irregularities. We will weigh your pet, and if the time is right, we’ll administer appropriate vaccines.
When necessary, we might also request blood, urine, or stool samples to look for any underlying signs of an illness. Our goal is to catch illnesses or diseases early on when they might be easier to treat and before your pet becomes extremely ill.
Keeping your pet up-to-date with necessary vaccines can help your pet avoid serious diseases. Like all of our services, our vaccinations are affordable and effective. We will even do our best to accommodate walk-in visits* for vaccines during our business hours.
We recommend these core vaccines for canines:
- DA2PP (distemper, kennel cough, parvo)
For our feline patients, we recommend the following:
- FVRCP (distemper, feline herpes, calicivirus)
Depending upon your pet’s lifestyle and risk of exposure to certain diseases, we might also recommend non-core vaccinations against Canine Influenza H3N2, Bordetella, Lyme disease, and Leptospirosis for dogs; and Feline Leukemia for cats.
Protecting Your Pets from Pests
There are plenty of tiny critters in High Ridge that can spread illnesses and cause other health concerns for our pets; namely, fleas, ticks, and mosquitos.
There are a wide variety of products that offer protection, but it’s important to choose one made specifically for your pet’s species (some canine products can actually cause death in felines). We can discuss these options with you at your pet’s wellness visit and help you make the right choice.
Common solutions for fleas and ticks:
- Bravecto®: For dogs only. A pill that can kill fleas and ticks for up to three months. A topical version is available for cats.
- Nexgard®: For dogs only. A pill that effectively kills fleas and ticks for 30 days.
- Frontline Plus®: A topical applied between your pet’s shoulder blades. Available for dogs or cats.
- Revolution®: For cats only. A topical product to help protect your cat against fleas, heartworms, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms.
Another internal parasite to be concerned about is heartworm, which is spread through the bites of infected mosquitos. We carry several forms of prevention. One of the easiest products for owners to use is Proheart®. It’s safe, effective, and simple to administer: One injection protects your dog for six months.
